High Gain Observer Design:
Towards an Engineering System Approach

The past decade has witnessed an increasing interest in high gain observer design to address the challenging problem of state reconstruction for uniformly as well as nonuniformly observable nonlinear systems. The main motivation of this workshop is to provide a com- prehensive overview on the available fundamental results with a particular emphasis on recent probing achievements from an engineering system point of view. The basic stability and observability concepts are first recalled together with mathematical preliminaries that have been commonly used in advanced designs. A particular attention is then paid to the Kalman filter in the perspectives of both state estimation and parameter adaptation. The high gain observer design is finally gradually developed in various frameworks depending on the considered class of system together with the crucial engineering features, namely the output measurement availability, the noise insensitivity, the transient behavior admis- sibility and the implementation feasibility. The high gain observer system engineering is illustrated in a realistic simulation framework involving the challenging practical problems that are commonly encountered in chemical processes and power systems.
